![]() ![]() Thanks to solid performances from Hollywood veterans, along with a pleasant but never intrusive musical score by Michael W. Only after a close friend frankly confronts Don’s difficult attitude and behavior does he recognize the reasons why God has returned him to face the pains and struggles of life. Ignoring the pleas of his wife Eva (Kate Bosworth) and friends to regain his will to live, this once confident man of God now lies in his bed waiting for another ticket to the next life.ĭon’s selfish desire permeates much of this film as we watch him turn, what many us would view as an incredible blessing, into a challenge that leaves him unresponsive toward those who love him most. He has seen heaven and is literally dying to leave the hell he has returned to in mortality. ![]() Yet an even greater problem exists within the survivor’s mind. Don’s broken body will require over 30 surgeries and months of rehabilitation. However the path that lies ahead after this miracle recovery is far worse than anyone could ever imagine. Crawling into the wreck he pleads with God to restore the man’s life and his prayer is answered. But when a stranger arrives at the scene, who also identifies himself as a minister, he insists he must pray for the occupant of the car. Pronounced dead, his body rests in the crumpled vehicle waiting for the coroner to arrive. I was right about the teaching moment near the end, but the lead up was not at all what I was expecting, and definitely addresses the criticism of Christian movies being filled with lollipops and rainbows.ĭon Piper (played by Hayden Christensen) is driving home from a church conference one day in a pounding rainstorm when an oncoming truck hits him. With that criticism in mind I came into 90 Minutes in Heaven somewhat expecting this two-hour movie to spend ninety minutes viewing the afterlife through the eyes of Pastor Don Piper (who did have this experience in real life) followed by a direct testimony of the reality of heaven. The critic was reasonably happy with the performances and concept, yet felt the movie fell far short of its potential because the world in which it existed was highly “sanitized” and “stacked the deck in favor of Christianity.” Starring Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN is based on the inspiring New York Times best-selling book that has sold 7 million copies. When reading a review on a recently released Christian film, the writer expressed a frustration I too have felt when watching faith-based movies. The Piper familys incredible true story of perseverance and overcoming the challenges of lifeand deathwill bring hope and encouragement to all who see it. With the support and prayers of his beloved Eva, their three kids, and friends near and far, Don clings to his faith in God and fights to regain a semblance of his previous life. Heavens bliss was replaced by excruciating pain and emotional turmoil. When another pastors prayers helped bring Don back to life, he became a living miracle! Yet this is one miracle Don wished never happened. Don's soul, meanwhile, was experiencing love, joy, and life like hed never known before. Declared dead by the first rescue workers to arrive on the scene, Dons body lay under a tarp for the next 90 minutes. Pastor Don Piper died Januwhen a semi-tractor truck crushed his car.
